How to Apply for a UK Student Visa 2026

The complete step-by-step process for Indian students.

01 Confirm Your Eligibility

  • Be accepted by a UKVI-licensed Student Sponsor university
  • Hold a valid Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)
  • Prove English proficiency (IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo)
  • Show sufficient funds: £1,334/month (London) or £1,023/month (outside London) for 28 consecutive days

02 Gather Your Required Documents

  • Valid passport (at least one blank page)
  • CAS letter from your UK university (unique reference number)
  • Bank statements showing required balance for 28 consecutive days
  • Academic transcripts and certificates (official, sealed copies)
  • English language test results (IELTS / TOEFL / Duolingo)
  • TB test certificate (mandatory for Indian nationals — gov.uk approved clinic)
  • ATAS certificate if studying certain science or engineering subjects

03 Apply Online & Pay the Immigration Health Surcharge

  • Apply at gov.uk/student-visa. Pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) of £776 per year of study during the application — this gives you NHS access. Have your passport, CAS reference, and bank details ready.

04 Book Your Biometrics Appointment

  • After submitting, book a biometrics appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) in India within 45 days. Bring original documents and your appointment letter. Fingerprints and photo will be collected.

05 Receive Your Decision & Travel to the UK

  • Standard processing is 3 weeks. Once approved, a vignette sticker valid for 30 days is placed in your passport. Your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) will be waiting at your UK address. Apply no earlier than 6 months before your course starts.
